If your gastric balloon has reached the end of its recommended time, is causing discomfort, or you are ready to move to the next stage of your weight loss journey, balloon removal is a quick, simple procedure performed under light sedation.

The removal takes approximately 15-20 minutes. A thin, flexible endoscope is passed through your mouth into your stomach, the saline is drained from the balloon, and the deflated balloon is extracted. You can typically go home or return to your hotel the same day.

Whether your balloon was placed at The Health Store Turkey or elsewhere, our team can arrange your removal. Many patients choose to combine balloon removal with a consultation about their next steps, whether that is maintaining their weight loss independently, having a new balloon placed, or transitioning to a surgical option such as a gastric sleeve.

Your package includes the removal procedure, hotel accommodation, and transfers. From £500, fully inclusive.

What Is Gastric Balloon Removal?

How Balloon Removal Works

Gastric balloon removal is an endoscopic procedure, no surgery, no incisions, no scars.

  1. You receive light sedation so you are relaxed and comfortable.
  2. An endoscope (a thin, flexible tube with a camera and instruments) is passed through your mouth into your stomach.
  3. The balloon is punctured using a needle passed through the endoscope.
  4. The saline solution inside the balloon is drained.
  5. The deflated balloon is grasped and extracted through your mouth using the endoscope.

The entire process takes approximately 15-20 minutes. You will not feel or remember the procedure.

When Should a Balloon Be Removed?

Gastric balloons are designed to remain in place for a set period, typically 6 months or 12 months, depending on the type. Removal is recommended:

  • At the end of the recommended duration (to prevent complications from an ageing balloon)
  • If you experience persistent intolerance symptoms (nausea, vomiting, cramping) that do not resolve
  • If your doctor identifies a medical reason for early removal
  • If you want to transition to a surgical weight loss procedure

Am I Suitable?

Balloon removal is appropriate if:

  • Your gastric balloon has reached the end of its recommended time period
  • You are experiencing persistent discomfort or intolerance that your medical team has been unable to resolve
  • You want to have the balloon removed before transitioning to another weight loss treatment
  • Your balloon was placed at The Health Store Turkey or at another clinic

The procedure is straightforward and carries very few contraindications. If you are able to receive light sedation, you are almost certainly suitable for balloon removal.

Your patient coordinator will discuss the timing, your goals after removal, and whether you would like to explore next steps such as a new balloon, gastric sleeve, or other options during the same trip.

What Happens During the Procedure?

Before Your Procedure

Your patient coordinator confirms the type of balloon you have, when it was placed, and whether there have been any issues during the balloon period. You receive fasting instructions (typically 6-8 hours before the procedure).

On the Day

You arrive at the clinic having fasted. The procedure takes approximately 15-20 minutes:

  1. Light sedation is administered.
  2. The endoscope is passed through your mouth into your stomach.
  3. The balloon is deflated and extracted.
  4. The endoscope is removed.

You remain at the clinic for a short observation period (typically 1-2 hours) while the sedation wears off.

After Your Procedure

You can return to your hotel the same day. Most patients feel alert and comfortable within a few hours. Mild throat soreness from the endoscope is common and resolves within 24 hours. You can eat and drink normally once the sedation has fully worn off.

Recovery & Aftercare

What to Expect

Balloon removal is one of the simplest medical procedures with virtually no recovery needed.

Day 1: Mild throat soreness is common. You may feel slightly drowsy from the sedation for a few hours. Most patients eat a light meal the same evening and feel completely normal.

Days 2-3: Any throat soreness resolves. You may notice that your appetite increases and you feel hungry more often, this is because the balloon is no longer taking up space in your stomach. This is a critical time to focus on the eating habits you developed during the balloon period.

Ongoing: Without the balloon, your stomach returns to its full capacity. The eating patterns, portion control, and healthier food choices you established during the balloon programme are your tools for maintaining your weight loss. If you are concerned about weight regain, discuss ongoing support or transition to a surgical option with your patient coordinator.

Risks & Considerations

Balloon removal is a low-risk procedure with an excellent safety profile.

Common Side Effects

  • Mild throat soreness for 24-48 hours (from the endoscope)
  • Brief drowsiness from the sedation
  • Slight nausea as the sedation wears off

Less Common Risks

  • Minor throat irritation or scratching from the endoscope (uncommon, heals quickly)
  • Difficulty extracting the balloon if it has partially deflated or adhered to the stomach lining (rare; your gastroenterologist is equipped to manage this)
  • Aspiration (inhaling stomach contents) during the procedure (very rare; managed by the sedation protocol and fasting requirements)

How Your Safety Is Managed

The procedure is performed by experienced gastroenterologists using standard endoscopic equipment. The light sedation protocol ensures you are comfortable throughout while minimising risks. Fasting before the procedure reduces the risk of aspiration.

Frequently Asked Questions

The removal procedure itself takes approximately 15-20 minutes. Including the time for sedation to be administered and to wear off, you should expect to be at the clinic for approximately 2-3 hours in total. You can return to your hotel the same day and resume normal activities once the sedation has fully cleared.

No. The procedure is performed under light sedation, so you will not feel or remember it. After the sedation wears off, you may have mild throat soreness from the endoscope, which is similar to a mild sore throat and typically resolves within 24 hours. No pain medication is usually needed.

There is a risk of weight regain after balloon removal because your stomach returns to its full capacity and the appetite-reducing effect of the balloon is gone. The key to maintaining your results is continuing the eating habits you developed during the balloon period, smaller portions, healthier food choices, regular meals, and regular physical activity. If you are concerned about regain, discuss your options with your patient coordinator, a transition to a surgical procedure such as a gastric sleeve may be appropriate.

In some cases, a new balloon can be placed during the same endoscopy session, though this depends on the condition of your stomach lining after the first balloon is removed. Your gastroenterologist will assess whether immediate replacement is appropriate. If your stomach needs time to recover, a short waiting period may be recommended before placing a new balloon. Discuss this option with your patient coordinator before your trip.

Yes. The Health Store Turkey can remove gastric balloons regardless of where they were originally placed. It is helpful to know the brand and type of balloon you have, as well as when it was placed, so your team can prepare appropriately. If you have any documentation from your original placement, bring it along. If not, your gastroenterologist will identify the balloon type during the endoscopy.
