How Balloon Removal Works

Gastric balloon removal is an endoscopic procedure, no surgery, no incisions, no scars.

1. You receive light sedation so you are relaxed and comfortable.
2. An endoscope (a thin, flexible tube with a camera and instruments) is passed through your mouth into your stomach.
3. The balloon is punctured using a needle passed through the endoscope.
4. The saline solution inside the balloon is drained.
5. The deflated balloon is grasped and extracted through your mouth using the endoscope.

The entire process takes approximately 15-20 minutes. You will not feel or remember the procedure.

When Should a Balloon Be Removed?

Gastric balloons are designed to remain in place for a set period, typically 6 months or 12 months, depending on the type. Removal is recommended:

• At the end of the recommended duration (to prevent complications from an ageing balloon)
• If you experience persistent intolerance symptoms (nausea, vomiting, cramping) that do not resolve
• If your doctor identifies a medical reason for early removal
• If you want to transition to a surgical weight loss procedure

Balloon removal is appropriate if:

Before Your Procedure

Your patient coordinator confirms the type of balloon you have, when it was placed, and whether there have been any issues during the balloon period. You receive fasting instructions (typically 6-8 hours before the procedure).

On the Day

You arrive at the clinic having fasted. The procedure takes approximately 15-20 minutes:

1. Light sedation is administered.
2. The endoscope is passed through your mouth into your stomach.
3. The balloon is deflated and extracted.
4. The endoscope is removed.

You remain at the clinic for a short observation period (typically 1-2 hours) while the sedation wears off.

After Your Procedure

You can return to your hotel the same day. Most patients feel alert and comfortable within a few hours. Mild throat soreness from the endoscope is common and resolves within 24 hours. You can eat and drink normally once the sedation has fully worn off.

What to Expect

Balloon removal is one of the simplest medical procedures with virtually no recovery needed.

Day 1: Mild throat soreness is common. You may feel slightly drowsy from the sedation for a few hours. Most patients eat a light meal the same evening and feel completely normal.

Days 2-3: Any throat soreness resolves. You may notice that your appetite increases and you feel hungry more often, this is because the balloon is no longer taking up space in your stomach. This is a critical time to focus on the eating habits you developed during the balloon period.

Ongoing: Without the balloon, your stomach returns to its full capacity. The eating patterns, portion control, and healthier food choices you established during the balloon programme are your tools for maintaining your weight loss. If you are concerned about weight regain, discuss ongoing support or transition to a surgical option with your patient coordinator.

Balloon removal is a low-risk procedure with an excellent safety profile.

Common Side Effects

• Mild throat soreness for 24-48 hours (from the endoscope)
• Brief drowsiness from the sedation
• Slight nausea as the sedation wears off

Less Common Risks

• Minor throat irritation or scratching from the endoscope (uncommon, heals quickly)
• Difficulty extracting the balloon if it has partially deflated or adhered to the stomach lining (rare; your gastroenterologist is equipped to manage this)
• Aspiration (inhaling stomach contents) during the procedure (very rare; managed by the sedation protocol and fasting requirements)
