Phimosis (a tight foreskin that cannot be retracted), paraphimosis, and urethral stenosis (narrowing of the urethra) are conditions that can cause significant discomfort, urinary difficulties, and impact on your quality of life. When conservative treatments have not resolved the problem, surgical intervention provides a definitive solution.

Circumcision for medical reasons is one of the most commonly performed urological procedures worldwide. Urethral stenosis surgery opens a narrowed urethra to restore normal urinary flow. Both procedures are straightforward, well-established, and performed by experienced urological surgeons.

NHS waiting times for elective circumcision and urethral procedures can be 6-12 months. A private procedure in the UK costs between £2,000 and £4,000. Your all-inclusive package starts from £1,435.

What Is Circumcision / Urological Intervention for Stenosis?

This package covers two related urological procedures.

Circumcision is the surgical removal of the foreskin, the skin covering the head (glans) of the penis. Medical circumcision is performed to treat conditions such as phimosis (where the foreskin is too tight to retract), recurrent balanitis (inflammation or infection of the foreskin), and paraphimosis (where a retracted foreskin cannot be returned to its normal position).

The procedure takes 30-60 minutes. The foreskin is carefully removed, and the edges are closed with dissolvable stitches.

Urethral stenosis surgery addresses a narrowing of the urethra (the tube that carries urine from the bladder). Stenosis can cause a weak urinary stream, difficulty starting urination, frequent infections, and urinary retention. Treatment may involve urethrotomy (cutting the stricture from inside) or urethroplasty (reconstructive surgery for more complex stenosis).

Your surgeon will recommend the appropriate procedure based on your specific condition.

Am I Suitable?

You may be suitable if you have a diagnosed urological condition requiring surgical intervention.

You may be a good candidate for circumcision if:

  • You have phimosis causing discomfort or difficulty
  • You experience recurrent balanitis
  • You have paraphimosis
  • Steroid cream treatment has not resolved phimosis
  • Your GP has recommended circumcision

You may be a good candidate for urethral stenosis surgery if:

  • You have a diagnosed urethral stricture causing urinary symptoms
  • You experience weak urinary flow or difficulty voiding
  • Previous dilation has not resolved the narrowing

What Happens During the Procedure?

Before your procedure

A consultation reviews your diagnosis and symptoms. For urethral stenosis, imaging may be needed to assess the stricture.

On the day

You are admitted to hospital. Circumcision takes 30-60 minutes. Urethral procedures take 30-90 minutes. Your surgeon uses the most appropriate technique for your condition.

Hospital stay (1 night)

You are monitored overnight. Pain relief is provided. For urethral procedures, a catheter may be in place temporarily.

Home

You receive detailed aftercare instructions for wound care, hygiene, and activity restrictions.

Recovery & Aftercare

Circumcision: Swelling and bruising resolve over 1-2 weeks. Dissolvable stitches dissolve within 2-3 weeks. Normal activities resume from week 2. Avoid sexual intercourse for 4-6 weeks.

Urethral stenosis: Catheter removed within 1-3 days. Urinary flow improves. Temporary stinging during urination is normal. Normal urinary function establishes within 2-4 weeks.

Risks & Considerations

Both procedures are well-established with strong safety profiles.

Circumcision risks: Swelling and bruising (normal), mild bleeding (rare), infection (rare), sensitivity changes (normalise over weeks).

Urethral stenosis risks: Stricture recurrence (may require further treatment), urinary tract infection (managed with antibiotics), temporary discomfort.

Your surgery is performed in a government-licensed hospital by an experienced urological surgeon.

Frequently Asked Questions

You will not feel anything during the procedure under anaesthesia. After it wears off, you will experience discomfort and sensitivity for a few days, managed with painkillers. Loose clothing and careful handling are important. Most patients find the discomfort manageable and significantly improved within a week.

Dissolvable stitches typically dissolve within 2-3 weeks. You do not need them removed. Keep the area clean and dry, and follow your surgeon's wound care instructions.

The glans will be more sensitive initially as it adjusts. This heightened sensitivity settles over 4-6 weeks. Long-term, most men report no significant change in sexual sensation or function.

There is some risk of recurrence depending on the cause and extent. Simple urethrotomy has a recurrence rate of approximately 20-40%. More complex urethroplasty has lower recurrence rates. Your surgeon will recommend the best technique and schedule follow-up monitoring.

Most patients return to desk work within 3-5 days and physical work within 1-2 weeks. Sexual intercourse should be avoided for 4-6 weeks after circumcision. Your surgeon provides specific guidance based on your procedure.
