A worn hip joint does not just cause pain, it takes away your independence. Getting out of a chair, putting on your shoes, walking to the shops, sleeping through the night, all become difficult or impossible. If conservative treatments have stopped working, hip replacement can transform your daily life.

Hip replacement is one of the most successful procedures in modern medicine. Over 90% of patients report complete or near-complete pain relief, and most return to activities they had given up. The artificial joint recreates the smooth, comfortable movement of a healthy hip.

NHS waiting times for hip replacement currently average 12-18 months, and many patients wait considerably longer. During that wait, your joint deteriorates further and your muscles weaken, making recovery harder when surgery finally happens. A private hip replacement in the UK costs between £11,000 and £16,000.

Your all-inclusive package starts from £8,025 and includes the procedure, 3 nights in hospital with physiotherapy, 7 nights in a 5-star hotel, all transfers, and aftercare. The 10-night stay gives you time to begin rehabilitation under professional supervision before travelling home.

What Is Hip Replacement?

Total hip replacement (also called total hip arthroplasty) replaces the damaged ball-and-socket joint of the hip with artificial components. The hip joint consists of a ball (the head of the femur/thighbone) fitting into a socket (the acetabulum in the pelvis). When arthritis destroys the smooth cartilage lining these surfaces, bone grinds on bone, causing pain and stiffness.

During the procedure, your surgeon removes the damaged ball and resurfaces the socket. A metal stem is inserted into the thighbone, topped with a new ball (metal or ceramic). The socket is lined with a new cup (metal with a plastic or ceramic liner). These components recreate a smooth, comfortable joint.

The implants used are from leading international manufacturers with decades of proven performance. Modern hip replacements typically last 15-25 years or more.

The procedure takes approximately 1-2 hours and can be performed through various approaches (anterior, lateral, or posterior). Your surgeon selects the approach best suited to your anatomy and condition. It is performed under general anaesthesia (fully asleep) or spinal anaesthesia (numb from the waist down with optional sedation).

Hip replacement is most commonly performed for osteoarthritis, but is also used for rheumatoid arthritis, avascular necrosis (loss of blood supply to the bone), and hip fractures.

Am I Suitable?

Hip replacement is recommended when your hip pain and stiffness significantly limit your daily life and conservative treatments no longer provide adequate relief.

You may be a good candidate if:

  • You have persistent hip or groin pain that limits walking and daily activities
  • Your hip is stiff and restricts your range of movement
  • X-rays show significant joint damage (bone-on-bone arthritis)
  • Painkillers, physiotherapy, and injections no longer work
  • You have difficulty with basic tasks like putting on shoes or getting in and out of a car
  • Your pain disturbs your sleep

You may not be suitable if:

  • You have an active infection
  • Your pain is manageable with conservative treatments
  • You have significant medical conditions that make general anaesthesia unsafe
  • You have very poor bone quality that cannot support an implant

What Happens During the Procedure?

Before your procedure

A consultation reviews your symptoms and examines your hip. X-rays and possibly an MRI assess the severity of joint damage. Your surgeon confirms hip replacement is appropriate and discusses the implant type and surgical approach. Pre-operative blood tests and a health assessment ensure you are fit for surgery.

On the day

You are admitted to hospital. The procedure takes 1-2 hours under general or spinal anaesthesia. Your surgeon removes the damaged joint surfaces, prepares the bone, and fits the new hip components. The joint is tested for stability and range of motion.

Hospital stay (3 nights)

Physiotherapy begins on day 1, you will be standing and walking with support within hours of your procedure. Pain is managed with medication. Over the 3 days, you practise walking, climbing stairs, and daily movements. You are shown hip precautions to protect the new joint during healing. Blood-thinning medication prevents clots.

Hotel recovery (7 nights)

After discharge, you transfer to your 5-star hotel. Physiotherapy sessions continue. You build walking confidence and distance. Follow-up appointments check your wound and X-ray the new joint. The extended stay ensures you are safely mobile before flying home.

Recovery & Aftercare

Recovery from hip replacement is generally faster than knee replacement, but still requires patience and commitment to physiotherapy.

Days 1-3 (hospital): Standing and walking with aids from day 1. Most patients walk to the bathroom independently by day 2. Pain managed with medication. Hip precautions explained and practised.

Days 4-10 (hotel): Walking distance increases daily. Stairs managed with confidence. Most patients walk independently with a stick by day 7-10.

Weeks 2-6: Continue exercises at home. Gradually reduce walking aids, most patients stop using a stick by week 4-6. Driving typically resumes at 4-6 weeks (automatic car). Hip precautions continue (avoiding certain positions to prevent dislocation).

Weeks 6-12: Significant improvement. Most patients return to desk work at 6-8 weeks. Physical work at 10-12 weeks. Hip precautions may be relaxed (your surgeon advises based on healing).

Months 3-6: Continued improvement in strength and endurance. Swelling resolves. Walking becomes natural. Low-impact exercise (swimming, cycling, golf) resumes.

Long-term: Most patients report dramatic pain relief and return to activities they had given up. The hip moves naturally, and most people forget they have a replacement during everyday activities.

For 6-12 weeks, avoid: Crossing your legs, bending the hip past 90 degrees, twisting on the operated leg, and low chairs or soft sofas.

Risks & Considerations

Hip replacement is one of the most successful and well-researched procedures in orthopaedic surgery, but it is major surgery with specific risks.

Common effects:

  • Swelling and bruising around the hip and thigh
  • Leg length difference (your surgeon aims to minimise this, but small differences are common)
  • Clicking sensations (normal)

Less common risks:

  • Blood clots (DVT), prevented with blood thinners and compression stockings
  • Dislocation (approximately 1-3%, most common in the first 6 weeks; hip precautions reduce this risk)
  • Infection (approximately 1%, managed with antibiotics; rarely requires implant removal)
  • Implant loosening over time (typically after 15-25 years)
  • Fracture around the implant (rare)
  • Nerve injury causing foot weakness (rare)

Your surgery is performed by an experienced orthopaedic surgeon in a government-licensed hospital using implants from leading international manufacturers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Modern hip replacements typically last 15-25 years, and studies show that over 80% are still functioning well at 25 years. Advances in implant materials, particularly ceramic and highly cross-linked polyethylene, have significantly improved longevity. If a replacement does eventually wear out, revision surgery (replacing the components) is possible, though it is a more complex procedure than the original.

Hip precautions are temporary movement restrictions that protect your new joint while the surrounding tissues heal. Typically, you should avoid bending the hip past 90 degrees, crossing your legs, and twisting on the operated leg. These precautions usually apply for 6-12 weeks. Your physiotherapist will show you safe ways to dress, sit, sleep, and get in and out of a car. Most patients find they become second nature quickly.

Your surgeon aims to restore equal leg length, and in most cases the result is very close. However, small differences (a few millimetres) are common and usually not noticeable. If your arthritic hip had caused a significant leg length difference before surgery, the replacement may actually improve it. In the unlikely event of a noticeable difference, a simple shoe insert can correct it.

NHS waiting times for hip replacement currently average 12-18 months, with many patients waiting considerably longer. During this wait, your pain continues, your mobility decreases, and the muscles around the hip weaken, all of which make recovery harder when surgery eventually happens. In Turkey, your procedure can be arranged within weeks, and the 10-night all-inclusive stay allows you to begin rehabilitation straight away.

Most patients return to low-impact activities including walking, swimming, cycling, golf, and gentle gym work. High-impact sports (running, football, squash) are generally not recommended as they increase wear on the joint. Many patients are pleasantly surprised by how active they can be, the key is choosing activities that keep you fit without subjecting the joint to repeated heavy impacts. Your surgeon will discuss your specific goals.
