Tonsillectomy in Turkey

A tonsillectomy is the surgical removal of the tonsils, two small masses of tissue at the back of your throat. The tonsils are part of the immune system, but they are not essential, and removing them does not weaken your body's ability to fight infection.

The procedure is performed through the mouth, there are no external incisions. Your surgeon uses specialised instruments to remove the tonsils from their beds while you are under general anaesthesia. Modern techniques (such as coblation) can reduce tissue damage and post-operative pain compared to traditional methods.

The procedure typically takes 20-40 minutes. Despite the short operating time, recovery takes 10-14 days because the throat is a sensitive area that takes time to heal.

Tonsillectomy is performed for both children and adults, though adult recovery tends to be more uncomfortable and slightly longer than in children.

Tonsillectomy is recommended when recurrent infections or enlarged tonsils are significantly affecting your health or quality of life.

You may be a good candidate if:

• You have had 7 or more episodes of tonsillitis in the past year
• You have had 5 or more episodes per year for the past 2 years
• You have chronic tonsillitis that does not respond to antibiotics
• Enlarged tonsils are causing obstructive sleep apnoea or breathing difficulties
• You have a peritonsillar abscess (quinsy)
• Tonsil stones (tonsilloliths) are causing persistent bad breath and discomfort

You may not need surgery if:

• Your tonsillitis episodes are infrequent and manageable
• Your symptoms can be controlled with medication

Before your procedure

A consultation reviews your history of infections, any breathing issues, and your overall health. Your surgeon will examine your throat and confirm that tonsillectomy is appropriate.

On the day

You are admitted to hospital. The procedure takes 20-40 minutes under general anaesthesia. Your surgeon removes both tonsils through your mouth, there are no external cuts.

Hospital stay (1 night)

You are monitored for bleeding (the most important risk in the first 24 hours). You begin drinking fluids and eating soft, cool foods. Pain relief is provided.

Hotel recovery (2 nights)

After discharge, you transfer to your hotel. The extra nights allow you to rest, stay hydrated, and ensure no delayed bleeding before travelling home. You receive detailed dietary and pain management instructions.

Tonsillectomy recovery in adults is more uncomfortable than many people expect, honest preparation helps.

Days 1-3: Significant throat pain, particularly when swallowing. Ear pain is common (referred pain from the same nerve). Pain is managed with regular painkillers. Drink plenty of fluids. Eat soft, cool foods (ice cream, yoghurt, smooth soup).

Days 4-7: Pain may peak around days 3-5 before starting to improve. White patches appear where the tonsils were, this is normal healing tissue, not infection. Continue regular pain relief and fluid intake.

Days 7-10: Pain gradually reduces. The white patches begin to shed. You may notice small amounts of blood as the healing tissue comes away, this is normal unless it is heavy or prolonged.

Days 10-14: Most patients feel significantly better. Return to soft, normal foods. Light activities resume.

Weeks 2-3: Full return to normal diet and activities. Most adults return to work within 10-14 days.

Important: Drink plenty of water throughout recovery. Avoid hot, spicy, crunchy, or acidic foods for 2 weeks. Avoid strenuous activity for 2 weeks.

Tonsillectomy is a common and generally safe procedure, but recovery involves specific risks that you should understand.

Common effects:

• Significant throat pain for 7-10 days (managed with medication)
• Referred ear pain
• Bad breath during healing (normal)
• White patches in the throat (normal healing tissue)

Less common risks:

• Post-operative bleeding (occurs in approximately 3-5% of adults, usually around days 5-10)
• Infection (rare)
• Dehydration (from difficulty swallowing, staying hydrated is critical)
• Change in voice quality (very rare, usually temporary)

Important: If you experience significant bleeding (more than a tablespoon of bright red blood), seek emergency medical attention immediately.
