Gallbladder Removal Surgery in Turkey

Cholecystectomy is the medical term for gallbladder removal. It is one of the most commonly performed surgical procedures worldwide. The gallbladder is a small, pear-shaped organ beneath your liver that stores bile (a fluid that helps digest fats). When gallstones form, they can block the bile duct and cause intense pain, inflammation, or infection.

The procedure is almost always performed laparoscopically (keyhole surgery). Your surgeon makes 3-4 small incisions (each about 1cm) in your abdomen, inserts a tiny camera and surgical instruments, and removes the gallbladder. The small incisions mean less pain, faster healing, and minimal scarring compared to open surgery.

Your body functions perfectly well without a gallbladder. Bile simply flows directly from the liver into the small intestine. Most patients notice no difference in digestion after a brief adjustment period.

The procedure typically takes 30-60 minutes. You stay in hospital for up to 3 nights for monitoring, then transfer to your 5-star hotel for the final night of your stay before travelling home.

Gallbladder removal is recommended when gallstones are causing symptoms or complications.

You may be a good candidate if:

• You have been diagnosed with gallstones
• You experience recurrent gallstone attacks (biliary colic)
• You have had cholecystitis (inflammation of the gallbladder)
• You have gallstone pancreatitis
• Your GP or consultant has recommended cholecystectomy

Before your procedure

A free consultation allows our team to review your diagnosis, any previous imaging or blood work, and your overall health. You may need pre-operative blood tests and an ultrasound (which can be arranged in Turkey).

Once confirmed, we arrange your hospital admission, 5-star hotel, and all transfers.

On the day

You are admitted to the hospital and seen by your surgeon and anaesthetist. The laparoscopic procedure takes 30-60 minutes under general anaesthesia. You are asleep throughout and feel nothing.

Hospital stay (up to 3 nights)

You wake in the recovery room and are moved to your hospital room. You may feel some discomfort and bloating, managed with pain relief. You are encouraged to start walking the same day or next morning. Your surgeon monitors your recovery, checks your incision sites, and ensures you are eating and drinking normally.

Hotel and home

After discharge, you transfer to your 5-star hotel for a final night of rest. Most patients are ready to fly home within 4-5 days of surgery. Your aftercare continues with our team once you are back in the UK.

Recovery from laparoscopic gallbladder removal is generally quick compared to open surgery.

Days 1-3 (hospital): Some abdominal discomfort, bloating, and shoulder-tip pain (caused by gas used during keyhole surgery). Pain is well-managed with medication. You begin walking and eating light meals.

Days 4-7: Discomfort reduces significantly. You can manage with over-the-counter painkillers. Short walks are encouraged.

Weeks 1-2: Most patients return to desk-based work within 1-2 weeks. Avoid heavy lifting for 2-4 weeks.

Weeks 2-4: Gradually return to normal activities. The small incision sites heal quickly, they are typically less than 1cm each.

Diet after surgery:

• Start with bland, low-fat foods for the first 2-4 weeks
• Gradually reintroduce fatty foods as tolerated
• Most patients can eat normally within 4-6 weeks
• Some people experience temporary loose stools after eating fatty foods, this usually settles

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is a very common, well-established procedure with a strong safety profile.

Common and temporary effects:

• Abdominal discomfort and bloating (resolves within days)
• Shoulder-tip pain from surgical gas (resolves within 48 hours)
• Minor bruising around incision sites
• Temporary changes in bowel habits

Less common risks:

• Bile duct injury (rare, approximately 0.3-0.5%)
• Infection at incision sites (rare, managed with antibiotics)
• Bleeding (rare)
• Conversion to open surgery if complications arise during the procedure (uncommon)
• Post-cholecystectomy syndrome (ongoing digestive symptoms, uncommon)

Your surgery is performed in a government-licensed hospital by an experienced general surgeon. You have a 3-night hospital stay for monitoring, and aftercare continues once you are home.
