What Are Dental Implants?

Am I a Good Candidate for Dental Implants?

Most adults with missing teeth are suitable for dental implants. The key requirement is having enough healthy jawbone to support the implant. Your dentist assesses this with a detailed 3D scan (CBCT) during your consultation.

What Happens During Your Treatment?

Your dental implant journey is carefully planned in two stages, with everything coordinated by your personal patient coordinator.

Stage 1, Implant Placement (Trip 1)

Before you travel: You share photos, dental records, and any X-rays you have. Your dentist reviews everything and creates a preliminary treatment plan. Your coordinator arranges your hotel, transfers, and translator.

At the clinic: On your first day, your dentist carries out a thorough examination including a 3D CBCT scan. This confirms the exact placement of each implant. The procedure itself is carried out under local anaesthesia, with the option of sedation if you feel anxious. You will feel pressure during the placement, but no pain.

Each implant is placed precisely into the jawbone using guided surgery techniques. If a tooth needs to be extracted first, this is done in the same session. Temporary teeth or a temporary prosthesis are fitted so you are never without a smile.

You stay one night for observation and recovery, then have a follow-up appointment before heading home. Most patients are in Turkey for 3 to 5 days for Stage 1.

Stage 2, Crown Fitting (Trip 2)

After 2 to 3 months of healing at home, during which the implants fuse with your jawbone, you return for your permanent crowns. This second trip is shorter, typically 3 to 5 days. Your dentist takes fresh impressions, and your custom porcelain crowns are crafted and fitted.

Recovery and Aftercare

Recovery from dental implant placement is more straightforward than most people expect. Here is what to anticipate.

The first 24 to 48 hours: Some swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort are normal. Your dentist prescribes pain relief and antibiotics to manage any discomfort and prevent infection. Most patients describe the pain as less than they expected, similar to having a tooth extracted. Applying ice packs and resting with your head slightly elevated helps reduce swelling.

The first week: Stick to soft foods and avoid chewing directly on the implant site. Warm soups, scrambled eggs, yoghurt, and smoothies are ideal. Most patients feel comfortable returning to normal activities within 2 to 3 days, though you should avoid strenuous exercise for about a week.

Weeks 2 to 12 (osseointegration): This is the healing phase where your implant fuses with the jawbone. During this time, you carry on with normal life, eating, working, socialising, while your body does its remarkable work beneath the surface. You will have temporary teeth in place, so your smile looks normal throughout.

After your permanent crowns are fitted: Care is simple. Brush twice a day, floss around the implant daily (your dentist will show you the best technique), and attend regular check-ups with your dentist at home. Risks and Considerations

Dental implants have a success rate of 95% to 98% and are considered one of the safest and most predictable procedures in dentistry. However, as with any procedure, there are risks you should be aware of.

Implant failure: In a small number of cases (2% to 5%), the implant does not fuse properly with the jawbone. This can be caused by infection, insufficient bone density, or factors like smoking. If an implant fails, it can usually be replaced after a healing period.

Infection: As with any procedure that involves an incision, there is a risk of infection at the implant site. Your dentist prescribes antibiotics and provides detailed aftercare instructions to minimise this risk. Good oral hygiene during recovery is essential.

Nerve damage: In rare cases, implant placement in the lower jaw can affect the nerve that runs through the jawbone, causing numbness or tingling in the lip, chin, or tongue. Precise 3D scanning and guided surgery techniques significantly reduce this risk.

Sinus issues: Implants placed in the upper back jaw sit close to the sinus cavities. Occasionally, an implant may protrude into the sinus. This is rare with proper planning and can be managed if it occurs.

Bone loss around the implant: Over many years, some patients may experience gradual bone loss around the implant (peri-implantitis). This is typically related to poor oral hygiene or smoking. Regular dental check-ups and good brushing habits are the best prevention.

Temporary discomfort: Swelling, bruising, and mild pain in the days after placement are normal and manageable with prescribed medication.
