Guided Tours of Izmir’s Attractions

Kemeralti Bazaar

One of my favourite places to bargain hunt is the Historical Kemeralti Bazaar. A bustling market with hundreds of shops and market stalls, it’s a dream for those who enjoy hunting for designer clothes and handbags without the designer prices!

While there, be sure to take a look at the famous Clock Tower just opposite the entrance. This clock has never stopped since the tower was built in 1901 and as a symbol of Izmir it’s a great place for selfies.

Historical Cable Car

If you’re a fan of fresh air and amazing views without the demands of a tough climb you’ll enjoy a trip on the historical elevator. Before the elevator was built, it was necessary to climb a 155-step staircase, but now a short three-minute cable car trip will bring you to the top of the mountain where views of Izmir and the surrounding bay will take your breath away.

Izmir Wildlife Park

A great day out for the family. I like to take one of the city bikes and cycle up the shore. It’s 14 km of beautiful views, all on flat ground, but not an activity to undertake at the height of summer.

Izmir’s Wildlife Park dates back to 1937. Transformed from the Fuar Zoo in Kültürpark, it spreads over 425 acres. There are plenty of cafes and kiosks and you’ll find lots of different types of plants, animals and bird species, including family favourites elephants, tigers, bears and hippos.

Our Favourite Day Trips

As a guest of The Health Store Turkey, one of our team will be happy to take you by private car to any of the following beauty spots or places of historical importance.

House of the Virign Mary, Seven Sleepers Cave and The Ancient City of Ephesus.

An hour south of Izmir is the House of the Virign Mary. It’s believed that John brought Mary here after the death of Jesus and that she lived out her life here. Thousands of Christians visit here every year and a massive ritual is organised by the Vatican on August 15, which is considered the day of the death of Mary.

On the way to The Ancient City of Ephesus we’ll stop at the cave of the Seven Sleepers. This cave is of great importance for both Muslims and Christians. It’s documented in both the Koran and the Holy Bible that seven people, also known as the Companions of the Cave, slept in this cave for 309 years.

Then it’s on to Ephesus. It’s rumoured that this ancient city was originally founded by female Amazonian warriors but it’s fame today lies in its ancient Roman architecture. We’ll take a walk through the ancient town’s paved streets that wind past squares, baths and monumental ruins and reimagine what life was like around the time of Christ.

Before we leave we’ll sing a song in the ancient amphitheatre and explore the inside of the preserved terraced houses with their beautiful mosaics.

In the evening we’ll return to Izmir where you can marvel at the sunset from Konak Pier and enjoy a well earned dinner at one of the lovely restaurants serving fine food and wine there.

Şirince Village

Just 10 minutes from Ephesus is the beautiful village of Şirince. Nicely secluded at the top of a hill, this village is famous for its local wines, but we love it for its picturesque views and winding streets which thread their way through shops offering handmade souvenirs and local crafts.

You’ll be spoiled for choice with restaurants of all kinds serving traditional Turkish cuisine. We recommend making a night of it and staying over in one of the small boutique hotels. Charlotte and Omer run the Şirince Terrace Cottages, one of our favourites.

Foca Beach

One of Nihal’s favourite ‘quick getaways,’ Foca Beach is one of Izmir’s most beautiful beaches. Only a 40-minute drive away, be sure to bring your swimwear as swimming in Foça Beach is one of the most enjoyable activities available during summer.

Be sure to visit the beach club where the cocktails are some of the best around. You can watch the beautiful sunset from your day bed and be waited on hand and foot by the friendly staff.

For dinner, amble down to the ancient harbour and end the day with some local grilled fish with a glass of Raki.

If you’re looking for a quiet and pleasant time, Foça Beach is for you.

Hotels & Thermal Spas

Doubletree by Hilton

This 4 Star city centre hotel is situated opposite a park right in the middle of Izmir. With modern, comfortable rooms, this is where all of our customers relax before and after their treatments with us.

Only 1.6km from the historic Clock Tower, it’s a great location to base yourself and explore all that Izmir has to offer.

Kaya Thermal Spa

You can’t come to Turkey and not visit one of the thermal spas! Treating complaints from rheumatism to chronic lower back pain and osteoarthritis, the health claims of Turkey’s thermal waters with their rich mineral structure are legendary.

In Kaya’s Spa and wellness centre you can enjoy an authentic Turkish bath for men and women. There’s a thermal jacuzzi, a fitness centre, indoor and outdoor thermal pools, scrub and foam beauty treatments, skin care and 17 different massage services for you to choose from.

The team at The Health Store Turkey often take a day or two to recharge our batteries here and we can’t recommend it enough!
