Metabolic Surgery means weight loss procedures used to treat metabolic diseases such as type 2 diabetes. This surgery is only performed on obese patients with a BMI over 35.
Why should I have my procedure performed in THST Hospitals?
All of THST’s clinics are staffed by experienced, skilled physicians, specialists and nutritionists. Our nurses and care staff are dedicated professionals. We prioritise our patients’ comfort alongside the success of our procedures. We have the most experienced medical weight-loss teams in the industry to guide you through the process.
What is the pre-operative process? How long is the operation?
Before any procedure, patients will have a detailed consultation with our expert surgeons. They will assess treatment options and discuss them in detail with the patient. The surgeon will assess overall health and suitability for the procedure. This process will include:
-Full urine test
-Respiratory function test
-Pulmonary diseases consultation
-Internal disease consultation
-General surgery consultation
The operation is mainly laparoscopic (closed) and takes around 1.5 – 2 hours.
SADI-S is an advanced form of bariatric surgery used to help patients lose weight. It is a modified version of the Biliopancreatic Diversion with Duodenal Switch (BPD-DS) therapy, usually referred to as the duodenal switch.
The SADI-S procedure involves two steps:
-The surgeon performs a sleeve gastrectomy, removing around 80% of the stomach.
-The first section of the intestine (duodenum) is divided just below the stomach and reattached (anastomosed) to a loop of intestine about two metres further along.
What are the advantages of the SADI-S procedure?
The SADI-S procedure produces greater weight loss than a sleeve gastrectomy or standard gastric bypass. This is particularly advantageous for people with a BMI above 50. SADI-S provides a more powerful metabolic effect than a sleeve gastrectomy or standard gastric bypass alone, which is why it is often used for people with Type 2 Diabetes. It can be performed on people who have already had a sleeve gastrectomy, which is advantageous for people who experience weight regain or insufficient weight loss. The procedure can be performed on patients who have already had a sleeve gastrectomy but who have not experienced sufficient weight loss or have regained weight.
SADI-S lowers the risk of nutritional deficiencies or other health effects sometimes experienced after a conventional duodenal switch. The procedure also reduces the long-term risk of intestinal obstruction compared to a standard gastric bypass or a duodenal switch. In SADI-S, the pylorus (the opening from the stomach to the duodenum) is retained above the connected loop of bowel. The pylorus continues to regulate the rate at which food and acid empty from the stomach into the intestines. It helps to prevent acid reflux in the stomach. This also reduces the likelihood of issues sometimes encountered with gastric bypass surgery, such as Dumping Syndrome, unstable blood sugar levels, food intolerance and marginal ulcers.
SADI-S for Type 2 Diabetes
SADI-S is now commonly used to treat Type 2 Diabetes. It is one a safe and effective method for treating this condition and is often used successfully when other treatment methods have failed.
