Periodontology is a specialty of dentistry that treats the structure of the teeth by caring for the gums and tissues that surround them.
Healthy gums are the foundation for strong teeth and should be rose-pink in colour.
If you find your gums bleeding, they may be in poor health, the main reason for this may be bad oral hygiene and calculus..
How does calculus form?
The food residues combine with minerals in saliva and they form a lime layer around your teeth and gums. These layers are soft in the beginning but they quickly turn into hard layers called calculus. You cannot remove this by brushing your teeth as the calculus is too hard. However, the dentist can remove it without damaging your teeth, with ultrasonic equipment that is designed for tooth cleaning.
Does tartar cleaning damage the teeth?
The most frequently asked questions are:
“Does the tooth enamel become scratched during the cleaning?” The answer is no, cleaning tartar from the gums does not harm, or scratch the surface of the teeth.
“Does the cleaning have to be repeated regularly?” For optimal oral health, teeth cleaning must be completed every 6 months. Your dentist or periodontist will recommend this relatively cheap treatment
What are the symptoms of gingivitis?
A healthy gingival margin will not bleed. You should contact your dentist immediately if you have bleeding gums without any reason or while brushing your teeth, or eating food. There is no need to become alarmed, as this can easily be fixed by a general scale and polish or more extensive root planing by your dentist or periodontist.
Gingivitis
Gingivitis is treated by the dentist or periodontist by giving the teeth and gums a deep scaling using an ultrasonic scaler.
Moderate Periodontitis
Moderate Periodontitis is treated by a specialist called a periodontist. They will assess whether the disease is at an early or moderate stage and can make a treatment plan to complete in surgery and also a plan for you to follow at home.
How do we brush our teeth?
It is recommended that you brush your teeth with gentle circular strokes. This is best done using a soft bristled brush. Your dental surgeon may recommend that you use an electric toothbrush if you are not cleaning properly using a manual brush.
Oral Hygiene Instruction
For clearing the exterior surface to teeth you must hold your toothbrush with a 45 degree angle to the gum line. Brush your teeth by moving your toothbrush in a circular motion with a soft bristled brush. This will prevent toothbrush abrasion.
The tooth has 5 surfaces, use the same method to clean the inside and chewing surface of your teeth, remembering to clean the interior and flat surface of the front teeth.
Do not forget to brush your gum line. Also, remember to brush your tongue. This will help to keep your breath fresh.
